How to Choose a Private Driver in Bali (Without Overpaying)

A private driver is the single best upgrade you can give a Bali trip — and the single easiest place to overpay if you do not know what to check. Here is the exact checklist we use ourselves, and the red flags that should make you walk away.

Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Xenia — standard private cars in Bali

1. Clear, all-inclusive pricing

A fair full-day rate in a standard car is around USD 38 for up to 10 hours, and it should already include the driver, fuel, unlimited mileage and parking. If a quote looks cheap but lists fuel, tolls and "driver meals" as extras, the final number will not be cheap.

2. No deposit, pay at the end

Reputable independent drivers and small operators never ask for an upfront payment through an app. Paying in cash after the day is done keeps you in control and your money safe.

3. Real English, not phrasebook English

The driver is your guide, fixer and translator for ten hours. Ask a question before booking — "what is the best month for Kintamani?" — and the quality of the answer tells you everything.

4. A flexible itinerary

The best drivers build the day with you, not for you. You should be able to swap stops on the fly — if a beach is better than expected, you stay; if a temple bores the kids, you move on.

5. Real reviews with faces

  • Look for reviews that mention the driver by name.
  • Recent photos from guests, not only professional shots.
  • Quick, specific replies on WhatsApp — vague answers are a red flag.

Red flags to walk away from

  • Pressure to visit specific shops or "art markets" where drivers earn commission.
  • Quotes that quietly exclude fuel, parking or tolls.
  • Requests for full payment or a deposit before the trip.
  • No photos, no reviews, no surname.
